Pick up from your Melbourne accommodation in the morning, then travel through Melbourne and over the Westgate Bridge, which gives you uninterrupted views of Melbourne's skyline and Port Phillip Bay. On reaching Geelong, Victoria's second largest city and port on Corio Bay, you travel along the scenic route seeing the sights of this city.
We enter the surfing centre of Victoria, the seaside town of Torquay, and begin our journey along the
Great Ocean Road, one of the best coastal drives in the world.
The Great Ocean Road is broken up into three sections, the first section we travel along is called the Surf Coast. Here the road hugs the coast passing sandy beaches, steep cliffs and through the towns of Anglesea, Lorne, Wye River and Apollo Bay, stopping at coastal scenic spots along the way.
The second section of the Great Ocean Road is known as the Otway's. We head inland climbing the Otway Ranges which are covered in wet eucalyptus forest and cool temperate rainforest.
We take a short detour off the Great Ocean Road and drive down to the Cape Otway Lighthouse, one of Australia's most significant lighthouses, it was the first landfall the sailing ships would see after leaving England bound for Australia.
After a short drive back on the Great Ocean Road, we take another detour to the Otway Fly tree walk, here you can see Australia's tallest tree, the Mountain Ash and large tree ferns of the temperate rainforest.
The third and last section of the Great Ocean Road is known as the Shipwreck Coast, here the cliffs rise out of the sea and you get to see the iconic places of this coast, such as, Loch Ard Gorge, 12 Apostles, Arch Island, Razorback and Bakers Oven Island.
Our overnight stop is at a seaside town called Port Campbell.
